Salem University Athletics

Born October 18, 1906, Bruce Horton graduated Cum Laude in 1930 from Salem College. While a student at Salem, he wrote a column, “Tiger Talk” which appeared daily on the sports pages of the Clarksburg Telegram. He also served as publicity director during his four years on campus, mailing news releases regularly to all the major newspapers in West Virginia.
 
After graduation, Horton was employed by the Pittsburgh Press as a reporter, feature writer and promotion editor for nine years. In 1939 he resigned his staff position with the Press to take a position with Gulf Oil Company’s aviation division with headquarters in Pittsburgh. In 1945, Horton resigned from Gulf Oil and began an 18-year career with the Register-Tribune Syndicate.
 
He first served as manager of the New York office and in January 1960, became general manager and vice president of the Register-Tribune, with headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
He retired in 1963 due to illness and passed away on July 24, 1973.
