A 1958 graduate, Shenal lettered four years in football, and was captain during his senior year. He was selected all-conference for three years, and won a spot on the Little All-American Honorable Mention team. Shenal also lettered for four years in baseball, and served as captain for that them as well, when he was named Salem College Athlete of the Year in 1957.

Shenal went on to teach at Matthews High School in Matthews, Virginia, where he was head coach of the baseball team, and assistant coach of the football and basketball teams. He also taught and coached football and baseball at Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, Virginia and spent 33 years in education.

In his community, Shenal was very active as a member of the town water board and swimming pool board. He worked with the Boy Scouts and the Little League, and started a basketball program at St. Bernard’s School, even serving as president of St. Bernard’s School Board.

Shenal married his high school sweetheart Jo, and they have been married for over 50 years.
