Ed Pastilong was the head football coach for six years, from 1968 to 1974. Acting first as an assistant coach to Don Young, Pastilong helped build the foundation for 14 years of nationally recognized success.
During his tenure as head coach, his teams achieved a 31-14-3 record. Pastilong won more games than any other WVIAC coach did during that period – and he won more games than any other coach in Salem’s history did.
Pastilong had 30 players selected to all-conference teams during his tenure, 10 of which were repeat selections. Two players went on to play in the NFL and both earned Super Bowl Rings with their respective teams: Jack Deloplaine with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Larry Riley with the Denver Broncos.
He was also the school's dean of health and physical education from 1972-75.
Pastilong went on to eventually become Athletic Director at West Virginia University until his retirement in 2010. While at WVU, Pastilong oversaw numerous improvements and projects involving athletic facilities, including adding suites and the Touchdown Terrace at the Milan Puskar Stadium, as well as the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility and new locker rooms. He also helped to oversee renovations to the WVU Coliseum and Hawley Field, as well as the construction of the Dick Diesk Soccer Stadium, Cary Gym, a wrestling facility and basketball practice facility.
Pastilong instituted a Life Skills program for student-athletes created an athletic director’s honor roll, constructed academic work-study centers for all athletes, and installed a consortium to help former non-graduated athletes return to complete their degrees.
