Another part of the mid-1970's age of football success at Salem, Ward came to Salem from Valley View High School in Germantown, Ohio, where he earned All-State honors as a offensive lineman. From there, he joined the Tigers in 1973 as a guard. Ward became an integral part of the Tiger rushing attack, which developed into one of the most dominant in the nation for the subsequent seasons behind his blocking. During the 1975 national runner-up season, Ward (and fellow Class of 2022 Hall of Fame Honoree Rick Markonich) was pivotal to the success of the Salem offense, which was one of the best in the nation that season. In total, Ward started in the guard position for three seasons for the Tigers, and heralded as a key team leader by the coaching staff up until he graduated in 1976.
