Dinwiddie was a four-year starter for the basketball team and a 1969 graduate of Salem College. He served as co-captain of the team in 1968 and 1969 when he was elected Senior Athlete of the Year. The same years he was named to the WVIAC All-Tournament Team and all-conference teams.
His athletic honors didn’t stop there. He still holds the number three spot in Salem sports history for rebounding 1,024 in 108 games He similarly holds the record for most free throws in a game with 19 (in 1969 against Alderson Broaddus), and the fourth highest total rebounds in a year, with 343 in 1969.
What he learned at Salem inspired his early career as a teacher of history and physical education at West Point High School from 1969 to 1975, where he also coached the basketball team and led them to a regional, district and state championship. Dinwiddie coached the Virginia High School League All Stars in 1973, as well as the state runner-up track team. He then served as Vice-Principal for his school for two years before moving into the business world with the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network.
