Born January 6, 1932 Frederick A. Spencer, Jr. was a two-sport athlete at Salem College and a graduate in 1954.
He was a two-time football letterman and a four-year member of the tennis team. While at Salem, Spencer was very active in campus activities; the college choir, dramatic plays and productions. After graduation he was very involved in the Salem College Booster Club and the College Athletic Council.
He obtained his M.D. degree from the University of Arkansas and became the Salem College team physician in 1967. Spencer personally attended to hundreds of Salem College student-athletes in over 150 football games and over 500 basketball games. He treated or arranged treatment for nearly all the sports personnel without any cost to the college.
In 1982 he was named the Alumnus of the Year by the Salem College Alumni Association. Spencer was a member of the Salem College Personal Care Board of Directors and has served on the President’s Council for Sports and Physical Fitness of the nation. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the West Virginia State Medical Society and the American College Sports Medicine, as well as the American Academy of Family Practice.
Spencer was awarded the American Diabetes Association Award for excellence in 1957 for his original research on oral anti-diabetic drugs.
