Born March 7, 1937, Harry Hartman served Salem College as an athlete, coach and professor. He was named First-Team All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) Football Team in 1960 and 1961 and was the captain of the football team in each of those seasons.
As the offensive coordinator from 1965-76, he helped lead the Hall of Fame 1975 Football Team to the NAIA Division I Championship Game.
Hartman was named to the All-Time WVIAC Football Team in 1975 and served as NAIA District 28’s Faculty Advisor.
He became chairperson of the physical education department in 1973 and was Vice Chairperson of Faculty in 1978. Hartman became Dean of Men for the Clarksburg Campus in 1967 and Director of Commencement in 1974. He was also a member of the Long Range Planning Team, Analytic Studies Team and a member of the President’s Evaluation Committee.
During his successful career at Salem College, Hartman developed an “Awards System” for outstanding Salem College athletes; the Physical Education Advisory Committee; the Physical Education Departmental Library; the Athletic Alumni Club; an evaluation system for the Physical Education department; a graduate program in physical education, safety, health and coaching; and annually assisted the athletic department in fundraising campaigns.
