A 1959 graduate, Hartbarger played tennis as well as football at Salem College. As a football player, he set several school records and was named to the All-Conference Team.
He played baseball in high school, and for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in Brunswick, Georgia and Clinton, Iowa. Hartbarger was also the youngest player ever for the Wayneboro Generals of the Valley League in Virginia.
He later went on to coach basketball at Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, Virginia from 1961-64 where his team’s went 75-14 and won three straight conference championhipss, 27 straight conference wins, 33 straight home wins and three national tournaments.
Hartbarger is very active in his community, and has served on the boards of the First Union Bank as Chair, Southeastern Community College, the Western Carolina Catamount Club, and on the New Century Scholars Program, a program established in North Carolina to provide scholarships to students who not otherwise be able to attend college. He was the first sponsor of this program, which serves over 400 students.
