Rogers graduated from Salem College in 1970 with a degree in chemistry. He played on the golf team for three years and won the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) Championship each year.
 
In three years, no one ever beat Rogers on the golf course, giving him the distinction of being an undefeated golfer. Accordingly, he was voted the most valuable golfer in the state and the WVIAC Golfer of the Year in 1969 and 1970.
 
In 1970 he took second place in the Amateur Championship of Western Pennsylvania and third place in the Amateur Championship of West Virginia.
 
His lifelong love of golfing was rewarded in 1986, when he won the West Virginia Mid-Amateur Championship and a 1996 win at the World Two-Man Championship, Senior Division.
 
After Salem College, Rogers continued his education by receiving a degree in Pharmacy in 1974. Upon graduation, he was immediately was offered the presidency at a pharmacy, now called Byard-Mercer Pharmacy, where he has remained for over 30 years.
