Born December 14, 1915, Kathryn Keys Thorniley lived next door to the college in the Keys Family Homestead and graduated from Salem College Cum Laude in 1937. She played basketball and tennis at a time when very few women’s sports existed.
After graduation, she made the Dolphins Swim Team at West Virginia University in 1937 and 1938. She resided in Lake Floyd and continued to serve the college on committees such as the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the university board of directors.
Thorniley’s concern for the quality of life at the institution had resulted in a very strong commitment to the well-being of the athletic department and to the entire university community.
