Brown played football for four years, lettered three times and was a starter for two. He played quarterback, halfback, center, defensive end, defensive tackle, defensive back and linebacker and also played baseball and basketball for Salem.
Brown graduated from Salem College in 1960 with a degree in Physical Education.
The diversity of his athletic experience at Salem enriched his professional career as a coach of high school football, basketball, baseball, track and golf from 1960 to his retirement in 1998. His coaching record includes 261 wins, 110 losses and 10 ties in A, AA, and AAA competition. Brown's teams won 20 district championships.
Brown was selected all-star head coach four times and all-star assistant coach three times for the Virginia High School Coaches Association. He won an impressive 10 coach of the year awards and was inducted into the Virginia High School Hall of Fame in 1993. The recipient of the National High School Coaches “Football Coach Gold Award,” Brown received a personal commendation from the Commonwealth of Virginia General Assembly in Senate Joint Resolution #71.
