Markonich's athletic career began at Bishop Donahue High School in McMechen, West Virginia, where he was a star on both sides of the ball during the 1971 season. From there, he came to Salem, where he was part of the most successful seasons in Salem football history. Markonich made a big impact immediately as he filled the fullback role as a starter during his freshman season. Markonich would play at fullback his whole Salem career, and even filled in at tailback from time to time. The most productive years for Salem and Markonich were 1974 and 1975 where he acted as the lead blocker for a powerful rushing attack that included 2 future Super Bowl Champions in Jack Deloplaine and Larry Riley. Salem would win a WVIAC title in that season, and they would even go to the 1975 NAIA Championship Game, where they would come up just short against Texas A & I (now Texas A&M-Kingsville).
