T. Edward Davis was born October 29, 1898 and served Salem College as an athlete, coach, athletic director, administrator and was elected as a member of the Board of Trustees in 1941.
He graduated from the university in 1923, lettering in football for four years, and was immediately hired as a graduate manager of athletics.
In 1925, along with other coaches around West Virginia, he worked out details for the formation of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The plan was accepted and adopted by the college presidents and Davis was a member of the first tournament committee.
He began coaching basketball in the 1926-27 season and guided Salem to two WVIAC titles. In 1930, while serving as Director of Athletics, he coached basketball, football and baseball. Over the next 12 seasons he led Salem to one WVIAC championship in baseball and a pair of runner-up finishes in football.
Although he left Salem in 1941, he returned in 1963 to become the Vice President at the college.
Selected as an original member of the Salem College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1962, Davis received a Certificate of Outstanding Service to Salem College in recognition of his 50 years of Association with the institution.
On October 4, 1969, Salem College held a testimonial banquet in his honor and paid tribute to his 50 years of service to the college and central West Virginia. At that time, it was announced that the Physical Education Building would be named the T. Edward Davis Physical Education Building. The building was completed and dedicated on October 11, 1974.
