McCort came to Salem after playing football at Akron Central High School. He started at Salem as an offensive guard and was a two-year starter who earned three letters. McCort was named to the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference First Team and was a unanimous choice as captain – along with Billy Connors – in his senior year. McCort also received the Yank’s Athlete of the Year Award in 1960.
McCort was selected to the Who’s Who and earned additional money beyond his scholarship for being a biology teaching assistant for Mrs. Juanita McCoy and working in the college cafeteria for his meals.
He graduated from Salem in 1961 earned his Master’s Degree from West Virginia University. McCort returned to Salem as a biology instructor and assistant football coach and went on to teach for 39.5 years at Salem, the University of Maryland, Kent State University, and Cuyahoga Community College.
McCort is a founding member of the Salem College Football Alumni Association. He has two children, a son who is a commander and pilot in the United States Navy, and a daughter who completed her Ph.D. from the University of the Southern California.
