Martin graduated from Salem College in 1977, with a degree in Physical Education and Safety Education.  He played varsity football for four years and was named WVIAC Defensive Player of the Year in 1975 with 15 quarterback sacks. Martin was also named an All-American his senior year in 1976.

Martin played semi-pro for the Red Raiders, a team in the Clarksburg-Bridgeport area in the 1970's.  In November of 1977, Martin entered the West Virginia State Police Academy and graduated that spring. He served as a Trooper for the WV State Police Academy for more than 10 years and was in charge of security for a celebration of West Virginia’s Promise when former Secretary of State Colin Powell, then Head of America’s Promise, was speaker.

An advocate for crime victims and a frequent lecturer at the State Police Academy, Martin is a regular presenter at seminars across West Virginia is regarding the Crimes Victims Fund. He is also a member of the Salem College Football and Cheerleaders Alumni Association.
