FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Salem International University women's basketball team scored a season-high 75 points, but it wasn't enough as they dropped a 95-75 decision to the Falcons of Fairmont State University Monday evening evening at Joe Retton Arena.
The Tigers slip to 0-7 (0-0 G-MAC) on the year while FSU improves to 6-1 (1-1 MEC).
Down as many as 17 points in the second half, the Tigers would cut the lead to just four (4) late in the final frame.
The run started when a pair of free-throws by
Samantha Aikens with 14:19 on the clock. After a FSU turnover, Aikens would make one of two freebes on the ensuing possession. Another FSU turnover led to Aikens draining a three to make the score 57-46 13:52 showing. After a missed jumper by Fairmont,Â
Shakinah Haggins' jumper got Salem to within single-digits, 57-48.
After exchanging blows, Courtney Littledog 's three, followed by free-throws by Aikens and a layup by
Briana Priestly brought Salem to within just four (4) points, 69-65, with 8:00 remaining. However, the Falcons would use a 9-0 run over the 2:38 to gain the cushion that they needed to hang on for the win.
For the game, Salem International was led by
Amanda Jackson's 10 point and 10 rebound double-double.
Samantha Aikens,
Shakinah Haggins, and
Inkera Patterson each scored 15 apiece.
Salem will now step into Great Midwest Athletic Conference play when they welcome Trevecca Nazarene and Kentucky Wesleyan into the T. Edward Davis Gymnasium this weekend.
