SALEM, W.Va. (Oct. 17) – The Tigers dropped a pair of matches at the Division II Championships Saturday at the SIU Pool. Salem International University lost to Gannon 17-9 and Mercyhurst 15-10 in the two matches.
The losses send the Tiger water polo team to 2-8 overall this season. Mercyhurst claimed the Division II crown with a 13-12 win over Gannon in the second game of the day.
In the loss to Gannon, freshman
Inigo Velasco (Madrid, Spain/Colegio San Agustin) led the team with three goals, while sophomore
Djordje Stavrevski (Pancevo, Serbia/Sportska Gimnazjia Beograd) and freshman
Mateo Kozomara (Chicago, Ill./Maine East) each chipped in two apiece.
In the nightcap against Mercyhurst, Stavrevski and freshman
Marton Dudok (Budapest, Hungary/Szinyei Merse Pal) each totaled four goals, while sophomore
Chad Doerrman (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) added the two goals to round out the Tiger goal scorers.
For his efforts, Stavrevski was named to the Division II Championships All-Tournament team.
Prior to the match with Mercyhurst, Head Coach Rob Bullion presented senior
Kristopher Arnold (Markham, Ill./Bremen) with a senior gift and thanked him for his contributions to the Salem International water polo program.
The Tigers are back in the pool Friday, Oct. 23 when they head to the Bronx, New York to take on Fordham at 8 p.m.
