Salem clipped by Trevecca, 2-0

SALEM, W.Va. (Oct. 8) – A pair of first half goals were enough to send the Tigers to a 2-0 loss against Trevecca Nazarene in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play Thursday afternoon.

The loss drops the Salem International University men's soccer team to 3-4-0 in conference play, 5-5-1 overall this season. Meanwhile, the Trojans improve to 5-5-0 overall and move a game ahead of the Tigers at 4-3-0 in the G-MAC standings.

The Trojans capitalized in the 29th minute when Samuel Mummert blasted a ball past Salem sophomore goalkeeper Dom Gillespie (Whitley Bay, England/Whitley Bay) to put Trevecca up 1-0 early. The Trojans added an insurance marker in the 34th minute on a penalty kick that was placed in the top-center of the net to extend the Tiger deficit to two goals.

After being out-shot eight-to-three in the first half, the Tigers attempted 10 second half shots compared to three taken by the Trojans. Despite the added push, Salem International was unable to convert any of its chances and was handed a 2-0 loss.

Gillispie, who was pressed into duty following a hand injury to senior Elliot Cook (Nottingham, England/South Nottinghamshire Academy), played all 90 minutes and made three saves in the loss.

The Tigers continue G-MAC play when they host Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday, Oct. 10 around 3:30 p.m.
