WILMORE, Ky. (Nov. 23) – The Tigers fell to Asbury (Ky.) 86-65 in non-conference action Tuesday night.
The loss drops the Salem International University men's basketball team to 1-2 overall, while the Eagles improve to 5-5 this season.
Sophomore
Gerard Tarin (Fort Myers, Fla./East Lee County) led three players in double-figures with 21 points and eight rebounds, while junior
Lamonte Fields (Dinwiddie, Va./Dinwiddie) and classmate
Parris Purcelle (Greenburgh, N.Y./Irvington) tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Tigers held the lead for the majority of the first six minutes of the game before Asbury made a push to take a 16 point lead into the half. The Eagles went on a 16-4 run to take a 25-15 lead with 9:34 left in the first half and maintained a double-digit advantage over the final 10 minutes to take a 51-35 lead into the break.
Salem International brought the deficit down to 11 points at 69-58 with 11:33 remaining in the game, but Asbury did not allow the Tigers to get any closer. The Eagles pushed their lead back to as many as 23 points to earn the win.
Asbury held a 22-12 advantage in points off of turnovers, while Salem International had a 19-12 edge in second-chance points over the course of the game.
The Tigers will play their home-opener on Wednesday, Nov. 25 when they host West Virginia Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
