SALEM, W.Va. (Dec. 11) - The Tigers routed Ohio University-Lancaster 126-76 at the Joe Manchin Classic Friday evening at the T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.
The win improves the Salem International University men's team to 3-6 overall, while the Bobcats fall to 1-7 this season.
Sophomore forward
Gerard Tarin (Fort Myers, Fla./East Lee County) led the Tigers with 21 points in the win. Five other Salem International players reached double-figures, including junior guard
Conrad Etchi (Burtonsville, Md./James H. Blake) with 15, sophomore guard
Saquan Epps (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglass) with 14 and junior guard
Parris Purcelle (Greenburgh, N.Y./Irvington with 12 in the win. Both senior guard
Tyler Bell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) and junior forward
Lamonte Fields (Dinwiddie, Va./Dinwidde) tallied 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
Salem International utilized 15 different players and ran an up-tempo offense that wore down the Bobcats shorter roster. The Tigers pressed for the majority of the game and forced 35 turnovers, which directly led to 50 points. Salem International totaled 26 steals in the win, a season-high.
The Tigers finished the game shooting 47 of 81 (58 percent) and out-rebounded Ohio-Lancaster 51-30 for the contest. Salem International also finished with a 24-8 advantage in fast-break points.
Korey Arledge led the Bobcats with 20 points in the loss.
Salem International concludes play in the Joe Manchin Classic tomorrow, Saturday Dec. 12 when it hosts Saint Joseph's (Ind.). Despite the event not being a tradition "tournament" format, the game will feature the winners of both men's games from Friday. Saint Joseph picked up an 83-81 win over Bluefield State in the earlier contest. The unofficial Manchin "title" game is set to tip around 7 p.m.
