NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb.28) – The Salem International University men's basketball team finished the 2014-15 campaign with a 99-74 loss at Trevecca Nazarene University Saturday evening at the Trojan Fieldhouse.
The loss ends the Tigers season at 3-21 overall and 1-13 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) action. Meanwhile, the Trojans improve their record to 8-6 in conference play and 12-14 overall.
Senior
Tyler Bell (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and
Gerard Tarin (Fort Myers, Fla.) led the way for Salem International. Each scored 21 points, while Tarin finished with a double-double after he hauled in 14 rebounds. Seniors
Abel Tillman (St. Louis, Mo.) and Chris Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each added eight points, with Tillman chipping in eight boards as well.
Trevecca jumped out to an 11-4 lead over the first three minutes, but the Tigers responded. Salem International went on a quick 7-2 spurt to pull within two, 13-11, with 14:26 remaining in the opening half.
Each team traded buckets over the next five minutes, as a Tiger basket with 8:59 left until halftime clipped the Trojan lead to 25-20. Trevecca then took control of the first half, outscoring Salem International 32-11 down the stretch to take a 57-31 lead into the locker rooms.
The Trojans continued to build their lead with 10-unanswered points to begin the second half, until a Tillman jumper with 16:52 left in the contest made the score 67-33. Salem International began to chip away at the deficit, outscoring the hosts 28-13 over the next nine minutes to pull within 20, 81-61, with 8:14 remaining in the game. Despite the rally, Trevecca did not allow the Tigers to get any closer and held on for the victory.
The Trojans were led by Byron Sanford, who registered a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Salem International held the rebounding edge, 52-46, including 20 offensive, and finished with eight blocks in the loss. Trevecca capitalized on its appearances at the charity stripe, converting 22-of-28 attempts (78 percent).
