SALEM, W.Va. (Feb.7) – Despite a game-high 24 points from junior
Samantha Aikens (Hilton Head, S.C./Manor C.C.), the Tigers were defeated 85-64 by Ursuline College Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.
Salem International University falls to 0-23 overall and 0-10 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) action, while the Arrows improve to 4-8 in the G-MAC, 5-18 overall.
Aikens finished the game nine of 23 from the field and added five assists and six steals to her final line. Junior
Alexus Cooper (Richmond, Va./Frederick C.C.) and senior
Shakinah Haggins (Lakeland, Fla./Snead State C.C.) each reached double-figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Ursuline raced out to a 49-29 lead at the halftime break behind eight three-pointers. With the score 55-32, the Tigers went on a 7-2 run to pull within 16, 57-39, with 13:20 remaining in the contest. Senior
Jessica Lagard capped the spurt off with a three-pointer, forcing a timeout by Ursuline. However, the Arrows controlled the pace of the final 10 minutes and claimed the victory.
Ursuline had five players score in double-figures, led by Emma Ricketts and Makayla Rosselot, who each chipped in 13 points. The Arrows, as a team, converted 15-of-30 three-point attempts and shot 46 percent from the field (30-of-65).
Salem International will play its final five games on the road to conclude the 2014-15 season, beginning with a visit to Ohio Valley next Saturday, Feb. 14, with the opening tip set for 2 p.m.
