SALEM, W.Va. (Sept. 6) – Despite a valiant late effort by the Tigers, the Salem International University men's soccer team was handed a 1-0 loss by Tiffin Sunday afternoon in non-conference play.
The loss drops the Tigers to 1-1, while the win improves the Dragons to 1-0-1 early in the season.
Tiffin notched the lone goal of the afternoon in the 20th minute of the match when a pass into the box redirected to the Dragons Mohammed Bilal, who drove an uncontested shot into the back of the net.
After Tiffin controlled the ball for the majority of the first half, the Tigers picked up pace in the second stanza. Salem International's best opportunity to even the game came during a three-minute stretch between the 78th and 81st minutes, when senior
Javier Ruiz (Mexico City, Mexico/Universidad del Valle de Mexico) and junior
Jan Deters (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Fridericianum ) each attempted shots from close range that were wide of the net.
Senior goalkeeper
Elliot Cook (Nottingham, England/South Nottinghamshire) made three saves on the afternoon to help keep the Tigers within striking distance.
The Dragons outshot Salem International 10 to seven, with a four to one advantage in shots on goal. Tiffin also attempted five corner kicks in the match, while the Tigers did not attempt any.
Salem International returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 8 when they host Slippery Rock University at 5 p.m.
