Men's basketball falls to AB, 92-77

SALEM, W.Va. (Jan. 21) – Despite a career-high 16 points from senior David Williams (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), the Tigers were dealt a 92-77 loss by Alderson Broaddus Thursday night in the T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.
 
The loss drops the Salem International men's basketball team to 3-13 overall and 0-3 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. Meanwhile, the Battlers improve to 4-1 in the league, 13-5 overall.
 
Williams poured in 16 points shooting 5-of-12 (41 percent), all on three-pointers, with three assists, a block and a steal. Sophomore Gerard Tarin (Fort Myers, Fla./East Lee County) and junior Dominique Robinson (Waldorf, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) each added 14 points, while Jerry Sipple, III (Kansas City, Mo./Wyandotte) chipped in 12 points and a team-best five rebounds.
 
Sipple and Williams drained a pair of treys to get the Tigers out front 6-0 to open the game. Alderson Broaddus took its first lead of the evening at 13-12 with 10:51 left in the first half, but the Tigers quickly reclaimed the lead on a jumper by sophomore Saquan Epps (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglass) with 10:28 left in the half.
 
The game featured three ties and six lead changes over the next five minutes before the Battlers opened up a 34-23 lead with 4:28 left in the first half. Salem International battled back by outscoring Alderson Broaddus 18-11 down the stretch to trim the deficit to 45-41 heading into halftime.
 
The Tigers ran into foul problems in the second half. Tarin picked up his fourth foul 17 seconds into the second half and fouled out on a dunk-and-one with 13:04 remaining in the game that gave Alderson Broaddus a 65-53 lead.
 
The Battlers led by as many as 17 points, before Salem International began to chip away at the lead. The Tigers went on a 12-1 run, capped off by a three-pointer from junior Parris Purcelle (Greenburgh, N.Y./Irvington) to pull within six, 71-65, with 8:39 left in the game.
 
Despite the push, Alderson Broaddus went on to out-score the Tigers 21-12 over the final seven minutes of the game to earn the hard fought G-MAC win.
 
Salem International connected on 27 of 46 (42 percent) from the field, including 14 of 39 (40 percent) from beyond the arc. Alderson Broaddus answered by shooting 31 of 59 (53 percent) from the field. The Battlers also finished 23 of 30 (77 percent) from the charity stripe in the win, while the Tigers were just nine of 14 (64 percent).
 
Alderson Broaddus also held a significant edge of the glass, 45 to 25, and out-scored the Tigers 44 to 23 in the paint.
 
Salem International committed a season-low 10 turnovers, but allowed 19 points off of those turnovers.
 
Five Battlers scored in double-figures, led by Thylas Perkins who tallied 17 points in the win.
 
The Tigers game with Davis & Elkins, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23 has been postponed. The team's next game is at G-MAC frontrunner Kentucky Wesleyan on Jan. 28 with a 7 p.m. (CT) tip time.
