SALEM, W.Va. (Jan. 7) – The Tigers were handed a 72-51 loss by Ursuline in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play Thursday evening.
The loss drops the Salem International University women's basketball team to 2-12 overall, 0-2 in the G-MAC. Meanwhile, the Arrows improve to 2-1 in league play and 12-2 overall.
Senior
Dorina Barrett (Detroit, Mich./Pershing) led the Tigers with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists in the loss. Redshirt-freshman
Keishla Gilmore (Philadelphia, Pa./Mariana Bracetti) chipped in 11 points, while senior
Alexus Cooper (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) added 10 points and five rebounds in the loss.
Despite allowing a 15-2 run to the Arrows to open the contest, Salem International only trailed 17-13 after the first quarter by out-scoring Ursuline 13-2 over the final five minutes of the period. The Tigers forced six turnovers and limited the Arrow offense to 1-of-6 shooting over the stretch.
Ursuline took a 37-27 lead into halftime, but could not pull away from the Tigers in the third quarter. Salem International's defense only allowed eight points in the third quarter and held the Arrows to 3-of-13 shooting with seven turnovers. Unfortunately, the Tigers did not take advantage and were limited to 10 points on 4-of-17 from the field in the third period.
Ursuline put the game out of reach in the final quarter. The Arrows outscored Salem International 27-14 to claim the victory.
The Tigers are back on the court Saturday, Jan. 9 when they host G-MAC foe Cedarville for a game at 2 p.m.
