Blue Knights blitz past Tigers 109-88

SALEM, WV - The Salem International University Tigers looked to even their record in front of a packed T. Edward Davis Gym against Urbana University. The Blue Knights would play the role of spoiler, as six Urbana players scored in double-digits en route to a 109-88 victory against the Tigers on Wednesday night in men's collegiate basketball action.

The Tigers (0-2) will hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to Farmville, Virginia for a contest against Division I Longwood University. Tip-off between the Tigers and Lancers is scheduled for 7 pm. The game will be broadcast live on radio and on the Big South Sports Network. Four Tigers would finish with double-digits in points as freshman Jarius Farrow led all-scorers with 23 points in the contest. Farrow dropped 21 of his 23 points in the second-half of action, going 8-for-8 from the floor and 5-for-5 beyond the arc. Senior Tavin Askew and Victor Blakey each scored 13 for the Tigers with Blakey registering a team-high seven assists.

Salem's offense would have a slow start to the night, shooting just 34.4 percent from the floor through the first 20 minutes of action. The Tigers, who have shown that they can shoot from behind the three-point line hit one of seven attempts from downtown. Askew paced the Tigers with nine points, going 2-for-3 from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line.

The Blue Knights started red-hot from the floor, getting 10 points from junior Charles Sweatt-Washington as he connected on five of his seven shots. Urbana also got nine points from freshman DeQuan Abrom and seven points from sophomore Jahmere Howze. The Blue Knights connected on 54.3 percent of their shots from the floor (19-35) and went 6-for-12 from three-point range.

The Tigers developed some momentum in the second half, but so too would the Blue Knights. Both teams would score 56 points a piece in a wide-open 20 minutes of action. Salem tried to generate more offense besides the hot-touch of Farrow. Blakey would try his hand at igniting the Tigers offense by going 4-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-5 at the charity stripe. Senior Saquan Epps chipped in eight points for SIU in the second half, including a 4-for-4 effort at the free throw line.

Howze and junior AJ Washington both went into double figures for Urbana in the second half with Howze scoring 10 points and Washington 11. The Blue Knights went 15-for-32 in the second half and 22-for-31 at the free throw line in a penalty filled 20 minutes. SIU connected on 19 of its 46 attempts down the stretch and seven of its 12 three-point attempts.

Sweatt-Washington and Howze each paced the Blue Knights with 17 points, while Abrom and freshman Jagger Surface scored 13 points for Urbana.

The Blue Knights finished with a 46-24 advantage in rebounding and shot 50.7 percent for the game (34-for-67). The Tigers shot 38.5 percent from the floor (30-for-78) and went 8-for-19 from beyond the arc. Urbana hit 10 three-pointers in the game and went 31-44 at the charity stripe. both teams combined for 50 personal fouls in the game, including a pair of technical fouls.
