SALEM, WV - Tiffin University would connect on 7-of-8 three pointers in the third quarter en route to a 65-41 victory on Tuesday night (Nov. 22) to spoil Salem International's home-opener in NCAA Division II women's collegiate basketball action.
The Tigers (0-5) will hit the road for the rest of November as the Tigers will play in the Virginia State Tournament against the host, Virginia State University on Nov. 25 at 6 pm and against Shaw on Nov. 26 at 1 pm. The Tournament will be held in Petersburg, Virginia.
Sophomore
Keishla Gilmore finished with six points (3-for-6) and two rebounds for SIU, while sophomore
Jiahna Flood-Francis paced the Tiger offense with eight points (3-for-7) with two rebounds and one steal. Junior center
Christy Gonzalez pulled-down a team-high six rebounds for SIU.
The first quarter of action wouldn't be kind to either squad, as both teams played to a 6-6 tie after the opening 10 minutes of play. The offense would pick-up on both sides of the court in the second quarter. The Dragons would gain the lead in the quarter and stay on top of the Tigers the rest of the contest.
Tiffin out-scored SIU 21-15 to take a 27-21 into the break. The Dragons shot 10-32 while the Tigers went 8-for-20 from the floor.
The difference-maker in the contest would be the third quarter as the Dragons scored 25 points to SIU's 11 to open-up their lead. Tiffin made nine buckets in the quarter and would catch fire from downtown, making seven of its eight three-point attempts. On the other side, the Tigers attempted only one three pointer and went 5-for-14 from the floor.
SIU and Tiffin each made four buckets in the fourth quarter, while the Dragons went to the charity stripe six-times. Tiffin would make four of its shots at the free throw line.
The Tigers finished the game 17-for-51 from the floor, 2-for-5 from beyond-the-arc and 5-for-9 at the free throw line. Tiffin went 23-for-60 from the floor, 10-for-22 from the three-point range and 9-for-12 at the charity stripe. Both teams committed 12 turnovers in the contest, with the Dragons out-scoring the Tigers 12-2 off turnovers.
Bre Nauman led the Dragons offensively with 13 points (5-for-9) and nine rebounds. Nauman also tallied two blocks and four assists for Tiffin. Allie Miller finished with 12 points and went 2-for-4 from three-point territory. Tiggie Sanabria finished 4-for-5 (11 points) and drained a team-high three three-pointers in eight minutes of action.
Off of the bench, senior
Dorina Barrett scored six points for SIU and tallied a team-high four assists. Senior
Franchessca Gill finished with seven points, going 3-for-6 from the floor for the Tigers.
