Tigers tripped up by Shaw 64-56

ETTRICK, VA – The Salem International University women's basketball team was unable to capitalize on a 22-point performance from sophomore Jiahna Flood-Francis as the Tigers fell to Shaw University 64-56 on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 26). Flood-Francis ended the contest by going 8-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-4 from  three-point range.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  •  First Half
    • The Tigers held a 15-14 lead after the first quarter of action, but would see the Bears claw their way back to take a 32-27 lead into the half.
    • Salem Int'l was 11-of-23 from the floor and 3-of-6 from downtown, while Shaw was 12-of-33 from the floor and 7-of-19 from three-point range.
    • The Bears out-scored Salem Int'l 18-12 in the second quarter.
    • Flood-Francis scored seven of her points for the Tigers, while senior Franchessca Gill went 2-of-2 from three-point range and scored six points.
    • Bianca Maxwell and Brianna Washington each scored nine points for Shaw with Maxwell going 4-of-5 from the floor with 13 rebounds.
  •  Second Half
    • Flood-Francis did her best to put the Tigers on her back, scoring 15 points in the second half and shooting 5-of-10 from the floor.
    • Falecia Cabral paced the Bears offensively in the second half, hitting 3-of-5 three-pointers and recording four blocks.
    • The Tigers would commit just one turnover in the second half, while Shaw was forced into five turnovers.
    • The contest would come down to free throws as the Tigers visited the charity stripe just three times compared to the Bears eight trips, with Stephanie Custodio going a perfect 6-of-6 at the line for Shaw.

 STATS FROM THE GAME:

  • Sophomore Quamilla Jackson finished with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting for Salem Int'l.
  • Senior Dorina Barrett finished with five points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals for the Tigers.
  • Maxwell recorded a double-double for Shaw with 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 23 rebounds.
  • Cabral finished with 17 points and Custodio with 14 points for the Bears.
  • The Bears out-rebounded the Tigers 43 to 31 with 14 of Shaw's 43 boards coming on the offensive end of the ball.
