Tigers come-back bid falls short against Lewis 111-61

QUINCY, IL Freshman Josh Carpenter scored 18 points for Salem International University, but it wouldn't be enough as six different players recorded double-digit scoring performances for Lewis University on the final day of the QU Subway Holiday Classic. The Flyers received 18 points from Delaney Blaylock en route to a 111-61 victory against the Tigers on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 18) in NCAA men's basketball action.

Carpenter would be the only Tiger to reach double-digit figures, finishing 4-of-11 from the floor. Carpenter connected on 3-of-8 attempts from downtown and went 7-of-8 at the charity stripe. He was also named to the QU Subway Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team for his double-figure scoring performances in both of the Tigers contests in the tournament.

Salem will kick-off a three-game home stand on Monday, January 2 as the Tigers welcome in the Ferris State Bulldogs to T. Edward Davis Gymnasium for a 4 PM tip-off. The Tigers host Alderson Broaddus on Jan. 5 at 7:30 PM and Bluefield State on Jan. 7 at 2 PM. All three of the games will feature live video and stats at www.SIUTigerPride.com.

The Flyers would out-score SIU 49-19 in the opening stanza and take a 30-point lead into the locker room after taking the lead mid-way through the first-half. The Tigers last lead of the contest would come with 14:53 left in the half as a three-pointer by junior Jordan Robinson gave SIU an 8-7 lead. The SIU lead would hold for 45 seconds as Lewis would re-gain the lead on a layup from Frank Vukaj.

SIU shot 30.4 percent (7-of-23) as a team in the half and went 4-of-12 from downtown. Lewis shot 52.6 percent from the floor (20-of-38) and 4-of-15 from three-point range. The Tigers went to the charity stripe only one time in the half, converting on the opportunity, while the Flyers went 5-for-8 at the line.

Lewis kept its foot on the gas-pedal in the second-half as the Flyers would lead by as many as 52 points in the half. The Tigers would get their offense going in the half as the shooting started to turn around. SIU hit 42.4 percent of their shots (14-of-33) from the floor and would go 9-of-10 at the free throw line. Things would be a little bit easier for the Flyers when it came to scoring as Lewis shot 57.1 percent from the floor (20-of-35) and 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from downtown.
