Salem swept at Trevecca in G-MAC opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 19) - The Tigers were swept by Trevecca Nazarene in each team's Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) opener Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

The Salem International University softball team falls to 9-9 overall, 0-4 in league play. Meanwhile, the Trojans, the defending G-MAC regular season and tournament champions, move to 4-0 in the G-MAC, 16-12 overall.

GAME 1: Trevecca 6, Salem International 1
A home run by senior Katie Chryssofos (Chapmanville, W.Va./Logan) was the only offense in the Tiger's 6-1 loss to open the series on Saturday.

Two-time G-MAC Pitcher of the Year Haley Fagan limited Salem International to three hits, while the Trevecca offense manufactured six runs on six hits off of sophomore pitcher Katie Holestin (Covington, Va./Allegheny) to deal the Tigers the loss.

GAME 2: Trevecca 8, Salem International 0 (Final/5 innings)
The Tigers were limited to only one hit in the team's 8-0 run-rule shortened loss to close out play on Saturday.

The Trojans plated five runs in the first inning and added runs in the third and fifth to complete the shutout win.

Sophomore Kayla Lynch (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) was charged with the loss after allowing eight runs on 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts. Freshman Kaleigh Decker (West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Central) had the lone hit for Salem International off of Fagen, who picked up her second win that day for Trevecca.

GAME 3: Trevecca 5, Salem International 3
The Tigers late-inning rally fell short, as Trevecca earned a 5-3 win in the first game on Sunday.

Salem International trailed 5-0 entering the sixth inning, but took advantage of a pitching change by the Trojans. The Tigers loaded the bases with a a pair of two-out walks and a Lynch single, before freshman Monika Garabedian (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) delivered a two-RBI single to put the Tigers on the board.

The Tigers drew within two runs when sophomore Tori Butler (Hedgesville, W.Va./Musselman) smacked her second home run of the season with two outs in the seventh. After the next batter was hit by a pitch to put the tying run at the plate, Trevecca re-entered Fagen at pitcher to earn the final out and end the rally.

Lynch (7-3) was tagged with the loss after yielding five runs (four earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts over six innings.

Garabedian led the Tigers with two hits and two RBI at the plate.

GAME 4: Trevecca 10, Salem International 0 (Final/5 innings)
After three scoreless innings, the Trojans scored five runs in each of the final two frames to complete the four-game sweep with a 10-0 win.

Fagan earned her fourth win of the weekend, holding Salem International to two hits over five innings. The Tigers best threat of the game came in the fifth inning, when Chryssofos and Garabedian led the inning off with a double and a single. Unfortunately, Salem International could not push either across following a groundout and two strikeouts to end the inning.

Holestin (2-6) was saddled with the loss after allowing eight runs (seven earned) with one strikeout over 4.1 innings of work.

The Tigers return to action this Thursday when they take on Ursuline in the team's home opener. The doubleheader against Charleston (West Virginia) in a make-up date from earlier in the season, has been cancelled
