Baseball swept by Davis & Elkins

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. (April 24) – The Tigers were dealt a four-game series sweep by Davis & Elkins in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) action on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

The Salem International University baseball team falls to 6-34 overall, 2-18 in league play this season. Meanwhile, the Senators improve to 5-11 in the G-MAC, 11-27 overall.

GAME 1: Davis & Elkins 10, Salem International 2
The Tigers opened the series with a 10-2 loss on Saturday to Davis & Elkins.

The Senators scored the game's first nine runs and held off any Salem International rally attempt.

Junior Talon Kunkel (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Centennial Collegiate) led the team with two hits in the loss, while junior left fielder Matthew Flores (King City, Calif./King City) drove in one run.

GAME 2: Davis & Elkins 10, Salem International 3
The Tigers left nine runners on base and were unable to rally in a 10-3 game two loss Saturday evening.

Salem International was led at the plate by junior third baseman Trent Dalton (Logan, W.Va./Logan) who delivered a two-RBI double in the fourth, while freshman shortstop Cody Crawford (Jacksonville, Fla./Trinity Christian) added a RBI in the fifth inning.

GAME 3: Davis & Elkins 8, Salem International 6 (8 Innings)
Despite a five-run second inning, the Tigers were defeated 8-6 in eight innings on Sunday afternoon.

Salem International took a 5-1 lead in the second inning with senior Jeff Apigo (Federal Way, Wash./Todd Beamer), senior Nate Mastervick (Beamsville, Ontario/Beamsville Secondary) and freshman Logan Steinle (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison).

The Senators eventually responded with four runs in the fifth inning to tie the game, while a three-run eighth inning put them three outs away from a game three win (game was scheduled for seven innings).

After the first two batters were retired, Steinle drove a ball over the left field fence for his first-career home run to cut the deficit to two runs. Flores followed with a double to put the tying run at the plate, but a ground out to third ended the game.

GAME 4: Davis & Elkins 5, Salem International 2
The Tigers and Senators were tied for six innings, before a three run seventh inning by Davis & Elkins gave them a 5-2 win and a series sweep.

Mastervick and Steinle each tallied two hits, a stolen base and a run scored, while junior Donato Gallano (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell).

The Tigers return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 26 for a newly scheduled doubleheader in Buckhannon, West Virginia against West Virginia Wesleyan. First-pitch of game one is set for 3 p.m.
