Softball bows out at G-MAC Tournament

XENIA, Ohio (April 28) – The Salem International University softball team had its season end with a pair of losses in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Tournament Thursday afternoon.  The Tigers lost to top-seed Trevecca 16-0, before falling to Ursuline 2-1 in an elimination game.

The softball team concludes the year at 23-27 overall, the most wins in recent program history in a single season. Senior Katie Chryssofos (Chapmanville, W.Va./Logan) wrapped up one of the most decorated careers in the university's history. She leaves Salem with the all-time and single-season home run and RBI records.

GAME 1: Trevecca 16, Salem International 0 (Final/5 innings)
The top-seeded Trojans (40-15) plated eight runs in the first inning with the help of six walks en route to a 16-0 win Thursday morning at the Athletes in Action Complex

Trevecca added run totals of five, two and one in its final three innings at the plate to claim the victory.

Salem International was led at the dish by freshman Jordan Whitaker (Palmetto, Fla./Palmetto), who had two of the team's four hits in the game.

GAME 2: Ursuline 2, Salem International 1 (Final/8 innings)
The Tiger season ended with a 2-1 loss to No. 5 seed Ursuline in the eighth inning under international rules Thursday afternoon.

Salem International loaded the bases in both the first and third innings, but came up empty handed each time after the Arrows turned a double play to keep the game scoreless.

The Tigers finally broke through when sophomore Tori Butler (Hedgesville, W.Va./Musselman) doubled in the fourth inning and scored on a fielder's choice by junior Jordan Williams (Coconut Creek, Fla./Monarch) to give Salem International a 1-0 lead.

Ursuline answered back with a two-out single in the bottom half of the fourth to put the score where it would remain until the eighth inning.

Playing the extra frame under international rules (runner placed on second base to begin the inning), the Tigers were unable to push across a run. The Arrows took advantage of the rule and came through with a pair of singles, the latter with the infield playing in, to end the game.

Whitaker led the Tigers with two hits, while Chryssofos drew three walks in four plate appearances. In her final plate appearance, she was intentionally walked with a runner on and two outs.
