VIENNA, W.Va. (Sept. 13) – The Tigers could not overcome a late goal and were defeated 1-0 by Ohio Valley Tuesday afternoon.
The Salem International University men's soccer team drops to 1-3 overall, while the Fighting Scots improve to 3-2 this season.
Each team had opportunities in the first half, but neither could put a ball in the back of the net. Senior
Ricardo Reyes (Pachuca, Mexico / Universidad del Futbol) and sophomore
Emilio Marti (Madrid, Spain / IES Colmenarejo) each had quality opportunities, but each of their shot attempts sailed high.
The match remained scoreless into the second half, when Salem International had another quality scoring chance. Marti sent a corner into the box in the 72nd minute that sophomore
Marcelo Pacheco (La Paz, Bolivia / Internacional Puerto la Cruz) put on net, but a stop by the Scot goalkeeper kept the game scoreless.
Ohio Valley finally broke through on the scoreboard with a goal minutes later that proved to be the difference in the match.
Junior goalkeeper
Dom Gillespie (Whitley Bay, England/Whitley Bay) made a pair of saves in the loss, while Reyes led the squad with three shots (one on goal).
Ohio Valley held a 17-to-11 advantage in shots, but the Tigers finished with a 5-to-3 edge in shots on goal. The Fighting Scots also held an advantage with five corner kicks, compared to four attempted by Salem International.
