Box Score SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Men's Salem International University Tigers came out victorious against Slippery Rock University, 1-0, Tuesday, on a beautiful sunny afternoon in Western Pennsylvania. The weather could be classified as "perfect soccer weather". Although it was a perfect grass pitch, it was a dry one which slowed down play a bit.
The Tigers' internationally diverse starting line-up (feel free to check the roster makeup on the website…) for this contest was:
Dom Gillespie in goal;
James Cockshott,
Ricardo Reyes, Jan Deters, and Leonardo De Meo in the defense; in the midfield were
Danny Carnalla, Christian Phillips, Joshua Gomez,
Emilio Marti, and
Marcelo Pacheco; with
Jacob Kemlock as the lone striker. Substitutes who played and contributed to the positive outcome of this match were:
Mateo Gutierrez,
Curtis Ketchup, Vinicius Abbas,
Kristian Sulbaran,
Fabricio Costa, Leonardo Figueirdo, and Ali Mozafari.
Brett Garris, Lucas Vianna and
Amon Tarus were on the bench but did not play.
This match was a back and forth one with no team really being dominant in the first half. Each team had their chances but could not capitalize. Early in the second half the Tigers came out strong. Only four minutes in when freshman
Leonardo Figueiredo (Bom Despacho, Brazil/ Tiradentes) stole theball from the opposition and played an amazing through ball to teammate sophomore
Emilio Marti (Madrid, Spain/IES Colmenarejo) which left him in "one on one" with SRU's goalkeeper. A cool, calmly taken right footed shot from just inside the right side top corner of the box rolled across the goal line and into the net beating the goalkeeper and putting the Tigers up on the scoreboard. This goal by
Emilio Marti early in the second half proved to be enough for the Tigers to hold on for the win.
The Salem International Men's Soccer improve to 3-4 this season with the win, while SRU drop to a 2-5- 1 overall.
The Tigers return to action Saturday, October 1 st , where they will host Malone University in the Tiger's home opener at 3 p.m. in Salem, West Virginia
