ERIE, Pa. (Oct. 15, 2017) – The Salem University Tigers men's water polo team put together a dominant performance on Sunday, defeating McKendree University 20-6 to close out its WCPA Division II Championships 2-1, finishing in second place.
Salem University was stifling defensively, pressuring McKendree the length of the pool. On one possession, the Tigers cut off all passing lanes, preventing the ball from entering any attack position, forcing a retreat and shot clock violation.
Sophomore
Milos Popovic scored four goals and freshman goalie
David Romero recorded nine saves through three quarters, shutting down McKendree University until the final 1:13 of the first half and limiting them to just three goals for the match before taking the fourth quarter off.
The Tigers scored five goals in each of the first and second quarters, including two by
Marton Dudok in the second, to take a 10-1 lead into halftime.
Dudock finished with three goals and five other Tigers scored two goals each.
Popovic earned CWPA Division II Championship All-Tournament First Team while teammates Romero, Dudok and
Petar Leontijevic were named Second Team. Leontijevic won Rookie of the Tournament.
The Tigers will travel to Bronx, New York this weekend to participate in the Fordham Invite on Oct. 21, playing Iona at 2:15 p.m. and Fordham at 7:30 p.m.
