Women's basketball team loses home opener

Tigers struggles versus Pittsburgh Johnstown's frontcourt.

Box Score

SALEM, W. Va. (Nov. 15, 2017) — The Salem University Tigers women's basketball team lost its home opener to the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown Mountain Cats, falling 57-67.

After scoring 20 points in the first quarter, the Tigers failed to score more than 14 in any of the remaining three quarters, shooting just 35 percent from the field, including 21.4 percent (3-for-14) from behind the 3-point line.

Keisha Gilmore led the Tigers with 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Salem University's leading scorer darted off ball screens with hesitation dribbles and crossovers, slicing through traffic to get to the free-throw line (9-for-14) and out in transition to finish 7-for-14 from the field.

Quamilla Jackson posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, ducking in for easy layups off teammates' dribble penetration and finding soft spots in the defense for midrange jumpers.

Aaliyah Dotson filled up the box scored with nine points, seven rebounds and six steals, jumping passing lanes and digging in on dribble penetration.

But Salem struggled after the first quarter with two starters in foul trouble. Isis Mance, who'd averaged a double-double in her first two games, was limited to just 22 minutes, scoring just a single basket to go with six rebounds, four steals and two blocks before fouling out. Jillian Romero also fouled out for the Tigers.

The Tigers struggled to contain Pittsburgh Johnstown's Olivia McCabe, who had a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds. McCabe did almost all her damage inside, pulling down eight offensive rebounds and getting to the free-throw line 13 times, making 12.

Guard Alexis Hartwick balanced out McCabe's inside presence, scoring 12 points and hitting 3-for-7 from the 3-point line.

Salem struggled with turnovers, committing 20 to give the Mountain Cats an 18-11 edge in points off turnovers, including a 14-8 advantage in fastbreak points.

With the loss, the Tigers drop to 1-2 while the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown improves to 2-1. Salem will hit the road this weekend for a match against Tiffin University. For live stats and streaming, click here.
