Tigers honor Gill and Hall; Fall to Malone 84-43 at home

SALEM, WV - After playing its eleventh home game of the 2016-17 season, the Salem International University women's basketball team wrapped up the home-portion of its schedule by dropping a 84-43 decision to Malone University. The Tigers also honored seniors Franchessca Gill and Karla Hall prior to the start of Tuesday night's contest against the Pioneers.

Sophomore Jiahna Flood-Francis paced the Tigers offensively with a 12-point performance from the floor. Flood-Francis went 2-of-3 from three-point range and tallied two assists. Sophomore Keishla Gilmore recorded eight points for SIU and registered a team-high three steals, while sophomore Quamilla Jackson added eight points and a team-high five rebounds.

Salem will have three road games to close-out the 2016-17 season as the Tigers travel to Kentucky Wesleyan on Monday afternoon (Feb. 20) for a noon tip-off with the Panthers. The Tigers will also face Cedarville University (Feb. 23) and Bluefield State (Feb. 26).

The first quarter would be controlled by the Pioneers and they up-tempo style of play. Baylen Dyrlund guided the Pioneers' offense in the opening stanza, shooting 3-of-6 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line for a 10-point performance. SIU went 2-of-13 from the floor in the first quarter and 2-of-2 at the free-throw line, while Malone was able to pull-away by shooting 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from the floor.

Trailing 19-6 after the first quarter, the Tigers' offense started to see some shots fall after staying aggressive on the court. SIU put 16 points on the board in the second quarter, going 6-of-20 from the floor and 3-of-4 at the free-throw line. Both teams struggled from three-point range in the quarter as Malone went 1-of-5 and SIU 1-of-6. The Pioneers used their pin-point accuracy at the charity stripe to put more distance between themselves and the Tigers, going 6-of-6 at the line in the quarter.

Hannah McCue tallied eight boards and eight points in the first-half for Malone as they took a 40-22 lead into the locker room. Flood-Francis had a team-high nine points for the Tigers at the break, while Jackson added six points and four rebounds.

Cold-shooting would plague the Tigers once-again in the third quarter as they went just 3-of-21 in the third quarter. Malone put its free-throw shooting on display again in the third quarter, hitting 13-of-14 shots. Rachel Goddard and Mackenzie Storlie each went 4-of-4 at the line in the quarter with Dani Drayer (1-of-2) missing the only free throw for the Pioneers.

The Malone bench would see a majority of the action in the fourth quarter Naomi Grandison scoring seven points for the Pioneers. Gilmore and Gill each added five points for the Tigers in the second-half.

Grandison finished with a team-high 14 points for Malone, while Goddard (13 points) and Dyrlund (10 points) both recorded double-digit performances. McCue narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with eight points and 10 rebounds.

SIU finished the game 14-of-66 from the floor, 4-of-24 from downtown, and 11-of-16 at the free-throw line, while Malone went 27-of-68 from the floor, 8-of-25 from downtown, and 22-of-23 at the free-throw line. The Pioneers would out-rebound the Tigers 42-29 and record 21 assists. Malone owned a 32-18 advantage in the paint and tallied 25 points off of turnovers, while SIU tallied nine points on Malone miscues.
