Lynch flirts with no-hitter as Tigers sweep Shaw, 3-1 & 11-6

RALEIGH, NC Junior Kayla Lynch flirted with a no-hitter in the opening-game of a twin bill for Salem International University on Saturday afternoon (Feb, 18) against Shaw University. The Tigers scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie en route to a 3-1 victory in game one and would plate six runs in the top of the third inning to record an 11-6 win and a sweep of the Bears.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  •  Game One
    • Senior Vanessa Jimenez delivered a double that scored freshman Morgan Atkinson to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
    • Lynch recorded four strikeouts through the first three innings of the game against the Bears.
    • The bottom of the fourth inning for Shaw started with a walk to Ale Masnica. Chris Ngeve followed two batters later with a single that would break-up Lynch's no-hit bid.
    • With runners on first and third, the Bears pulled-off a successful double-steal to knot the game 1-1.
    • Lynch and Shaw starter Sheni Fahie traded zeros on the scoreboard until the seventh inning.
    • Atkinson reached base after her one-out single in the top of the seventh for SIU. Sophomore Sam Perez hit her first triple of the season to score Atkinson and give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
    • Perez scored one batter later after an error by Shaw's second baseman to give the Tigers a two-run cushion.
    • Working with a lead, Lynch worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh. Lynch fanned back-to-back batters to secure the 3-1 win for SIU.
    • Six different Tigers recorded a hit in the win for SIU, with Jimenez and Perez recording both RBIs for the Tigers.
    • Offensively, SIU worked three walks in the game and called out on strikes just once.
    • Freshman Rosey Romick recorded her first double in the top of the fourth inning.
    • Shaw tallied two hits in the game, while Fahie allowed three runs on six hits for the Bears.
    • Fahie dropped to 0-2 on the season with the loss, while Lynch earned her first win of the season and moved to 1-0.
  • Game Two
    • Junior Katie Holestin got the start for SIU in game two and was opposed by Shaw starter Baile Nixon.
    • The Tigers struck offensively for three runs in the top of the second inning against Nixon.
    • Atkinson doubled to plate sophomore Kaleigh Decker and give SIU a 1-0 lead. Freshman Sydney McPherson followed with a double of her own to score Atkinson and make it 2-0.
    • Senior Jordan Williams made it 3-0 with her RBI groundout that scored McPherson.
    • SIU would apply more pressure in the top of the third inning, scoring six runs to up its lead to 9-0.
    • The inning would be highlighted by a two-RBI double from Perez and a two-RBI triple from Jimenez.
    • Shaw plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a single by Tori Hale to cut the deficit to 9-2.
    • The Bears would make things interesting in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four-times to cut the Tigers lead to 9-6.
    • SIU turned an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to stop the threat and get back on offense.
    • The Tigers would add a run in both the six and seventh innings, with Perez recording her third RBI of the game with a double.
    • Perez finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, while Atkinson, McPherson, and Jimenez each recorded two-hit games.
    • Masnica finished the game 3-for-3 for Shaw, while Ngeve went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored.
    • Nixon (1-1) Suffered her first loss of the season for Shaw, allowing 11 runs on 15 hits in seven innings of work. Holestin moved to 1-0 on the season, allowing six runs on 11 hits in her complete-game effort. She also issued four walks and fanned three batters.

UP NEXT:

The Tigers head to North Carolina next weekend for a pair of doubleheaders against Chowan University (Feb. 25) and Elizabeth City State University (Feb. 26).
