Pioneers snag twin bill from Tigers, 3-0 & 8-1

GLENVILLE, WV - The Salem International University Tigers and Glenville State College Pioneers played through snowy and windy conditions on Thursday afternoon (March 2) at Doug Morris Field. Offensively, it would be a quiet afternoon for the Tigers, who left 14 runners on base between the two games. Glenville State won a pitcher's duel (3-0) in the opening game and followed with an 8-1 victory in the second game.

Junior Hanna Crew and freshman Rosey Romick each finished the day 3-for-6 at the plate for SIU (4-4), while sophomore Jordan Whitaker accounted for the Tigers' run in the second game with a run-scoring double.

In the opening game, SIU found itself with numerous opportunities to try and break a scoreless tie on the scoreboard. The Tigers would load the bases up against Glenville State starter Ally Brown in the top of the third inning. Romick started the frame with an infield single to the shortstop and would advance to second after freshman Morgan Atkinson was hit by a pitch.

The Pioneers would get back-to-back outs and look to escape any damage in the frame with junior Tori Butler coming to the plate for SIU. Butler delivered a single through the left-side and into left field to load the bases for the Tigers. Brown kept the Tigers off of the scoreboard by getting a groundout to the shortstop.

Glenville State answered the Tigers rally in the bottom-half of the frame with one of their own. SIU junior Kayla Lynch found herself on cruise control for the Tigers until the second out of the inning was recorded. The Pioneers kept the inning alive with a double from McKenzie Edmonds after grounding out and striking out to give them two quick outs. Brown helped her cause by delivering her own double into right field and scoring Edmonds from second to make it 1-0 Glenville State.

SIU stranded a pair of runners on base in both the fifth and sixth innings. The dagger for the Tigers would be the Pioneers adding a run in each of those innings to up their lead to 3-0 heading to the top of the seventh inning. All three hits for the Pioneers would be doubles and come from Brown (2) and Edmonds (1).

Lynch (2-2) suffered the hard-luck loss for SIU, allowing three runs on three hits in six innings of work. Lynch walked three batters and fanned 13 Glenville State batters in the contest. Brown (2-4) was able to work around five hits in seven innings of work, walking two batters and fanning five.

Junior Katie Holestin got the start in the second game for SIU and would be opposed by Glenville State's Miranda Cropp. The Pioneers got onto the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third inning. Smith and Cassidy Taylor delivered RBI singles to account for both of Glenville State's runs and give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. Whitaker trimmed the Pioneers' lead to 2-1 with her RBI double in the top of the fourth inning.

The Pioneers matched the run in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-1 and would follow with a five-run fifth inning against the Tigers. Trailing 8-1, SIU looked to mount a rally in the seventh inning. Glenville State reliever Kahla Von Berge retired the Tigers in-order to secure the victory.

Despite being removed from the game with one out in the fifth inning, Cropp (2-0) earned the win for the Pioneers. Cropp allowed one run on six hits, walking one batter and fanning two. Tori Ward and Von Berge combined to toss 2.2 scoreless innings of relief for the Pioneers. Brown finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored, while Taylor went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
