Box Score 2 SALEM, WV - Senior pitcher Able Hernandez tossed his third complete game of the season on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 29) as Salem International University earned a doubleheader split with West Virginia Wesleyan College. The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning in game two en route to a 3-2 victory. The Bobcats scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie in game one to record a 3-1 win.
Hernandez improved to 3-5 on the season after quieting the Bobcats' bats in game two, scattering two runs (one earned) over seven innings of work. He walked four batters and fanned four in his ninth start of the season.
Senior outfielder
Matthew Flores finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate for the Tigers, including a 2-for-2 effort in game two. SIU tallied 11 hits between the two games.
The Tigers play host to Davis & Elkins College on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 2) beginning at noon. The Tigers and Senators will play a pair of games.
In game one, the Bobcats opened the scoring in the top of the first inning against SIU sophomore starter
Jordan Wagner. The Tigers would answer right back in the home-half of the frame.
Sophomore
Jimmy Cramer and senior
Donato Gallano delivered back-to-back singles to put the SIU offense in motion. Senior
Sean Deviney scored Cramer from third with his sacrifice fly to right field, knotting the score 1-1.
Wagner settled in for the Tigers and would give SIU six quality innings, despite being handed with the loss in the end. Neither team would be able to pull-ahead until the Bobcats rallied in the top of the sixth inning.
A fielding error by SIU put the lead-off batter on base to start the sixth. That error would prove costly for the Tigers as one batter later the go-ahead run would score from second on a single through the right side.
Leading 2-1, Wesleyan upped its lead to 3-1 with a run-scoring single into right field. SIU loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning in hopes of mounting a come-back. With the tying run on second and the potential game-winning run on first, Bobcat closer Chris Metrick got Gallano to strikeout looking to end the game.
Wagner was dealt with the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) in six innings of work. He scattered eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
In game two, SIU struck first with a two-run first inning. Junior
Zach Mullinax gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead with his sacrifice fly to center field. Deviney then made it 2-0 with his run-scoring single into right center.
The score would hold until the top of the third inning as the Bobcats got onto the scoreboard against Hernandez and the Tigers. SIU got its two-run lead back in the bottom portion of the frame as Mullinax hit a rocket to third, scoring Cramer.
Trailing 3-1 entering the top of the sixth inning, Wesleyan trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with a solo home run over the left field fence.
Hernandez worked around a one-out walk in the top of the seventh inning to record a strikeout and a line-out to give SIU a 3-2 victory. The win is the first at home this season for the Tigers.
