Six-run first propels SIU Softball to doubleheader split with Senators

GLENVILLE, WV - The Sue Morris Sports Complex acted as the "Home away from Home" for the Salem International University softball team on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 29) against Davis & Elkins College after Mother Nature postponed the two schools from playing in Salem on Tuesday. The Tigers scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning in game two and would hold-off a late rally by the Senators en route to a 7-5 victory. Davis & Elkins scored eight runs over the first two innings of game one to claim a 10-0 victory in five innings.

The Tigers head to West Liberty tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader against the Hilltoppers. Game one is set to start at 2 p.m.

Freshman Morgan Atkinson hit her first collegiate home run in game two of the twin bill to give the Tigers a two-run lead (7-5) after the Senators trimmed the deficit to a single score.

The Senators tallied five runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead in game one against the Tigers. D&E added to its lead in the second inning, scoring three more runs to stretch the lead to 8-0.

Junior Katie Holestin got the start for SIU in game one and would see the Senators plate a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to increase the lead to 10-0.

SIU had its best scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth inning as sophomore Sam Perez delivered a two-out single through the left side. Perez would move over to third base after senior Vanessa Jimenez laced a double into left center. Junior Tori Butler then hit a fly ball to left field to end the game.

In game two, SIU flipped the switch on the Senators and scored six-times in the bottom of the first inning. Junior pitcher Kayla Lynch helped her own cause by hitting a run-scoring single to right field that made it 2-0 SIU.

Freshman Rosey Romick highlighted the frame with her base-clearing triple to right center that increased the Tigers lead to 5-0. Sophomore Kaleigh Decker rounded-out the scoring in the inning for the Tigers with her single to right center that plated Romick from third.

Trailing 6-0 entering the top of the third inning, Davis & Elkins scored its first run of the game with a single to right center. The Senators added three more runs in the fourth inning against Lynch and the Tigers.

With the lead trimmed down to 6-4 after four innings of play, the Senators would pull to within a single run of the Tigers after plating a run in the top of the fifth inning. Atkinson answered the run scored by the Senators with a solo home run on a 3-2 pitch.

D&E looked to have one final rally in book in the top of the seventh inning. The Senators got the tying run into scoring position with no-outs in the frame after a double and a single.

The biggest play of the game defensively for the Tigers came on a fly ball that was hit to Butler in center field. D&E looked to make it a one-run game by scoring from third on the play but would get caught-up in a run-down for the second out of the inning. Lynch got a pop-up to short to end the game and give the Tigers a 7-5 victory.

Lynch allowed five runs (four earned) on 12 hits through seven innings of work. She walked three batters and fanned two en route to improving her record to 5-8 on the season. Atkinson and Decker both finished with two-hit games for SIU.
