Cartenuto's gem leads SIU to split against Bobcats

BUCKHANNON, WV - Sophomore Albert Cartenuto tossed a complete-game shutout in game two on Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 18) to lead the Tigers to a 3-0 win against West Virginia Wesleyan College. The Bobcats scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to break a 1-1 tie and capture a 3-1 victory in game one against the Tigers.

Senior Able Hernandez started game one for the Tigers and would see the Bobcats plate a two-out run on a single to center field to take an early 1-0 lead.

Senior Sean Deviney recorded the Tigers' first hit of the game in the top of the second inning as he delivered a one-out single down the left field line. SIU would be unable to play Deviney as it recorded back-to-back fly outs to end the frame.

The Tigers knotted the game 1-1 in the top of the third inning as sophomore Jimmy Cramer legged-out an infield single to plate Cartenuto from third base. Cartenuto started the frame with a single down the left field line and would advance to second after a throwing error by the Wesleyan catcher. A sacrifice bunt from freshman Tyler Ault moved Cartenuto over to third base to setup the scoring opportunity.

Wesleyan regained the momentum in the bottom of the fifth inning as a triple into the right center field gap plated a runner from second base. The Bobcats plated an insurance run against Hernandez and the Tigers in the bottom of the sixth inning to increase their lead to 3-1.

SIU put the tying-run on base in the top of the seventh inning after a lead-off single from sophomore Isaiah Arroyo and a one-out walk by Cartenuto. The rally would fall short for the Tigers as Wesleyan recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

In game two, the Tigers would strike first in the top of the third inning for a pair of runs against Bobcat pitching. Cramer tallied his second RBI hit of the day with a single to center field to score senior Josh VanMeter. Senior Matt Flores then gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with his sacrifice fly to right field to score Hernandez.

Cartenuto would settle in for the Tigers after his offense spotted him a two-run lead. The Bobcats would place a runner on base in each of the middle-innings but come up empty against Cartenuto as the Tigers played solid defense behind him.

Senior Sean Deviney added another run for the Tigers in the top of the sixth inning as his two-out RBI single through the left side scored Cramer to make it 3-0. SIU looked to add more runs to its total in the top of the seventh inning after back-to-back singles to start the frame. The Tigers successfully moved both runners into scoring position with one out but would fail to plate either as a strikeout and groundout ended the inning.

Cartenuto capped-off his shutout after working around a lead-off walk in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Tigers sealed the 3-1 victory by turning a game-ending 6-3 double play.

Cartenuto scattered three hits over seven innings of work and fanned two batters while walking three. The win for the Tigers evened the season-series against the Bobcats at two games a piece.
