Tigers see lead slip-away at home against Senators

NUTTER FORT, WV - The Salem International University Tigers scored the first four runs of game two against Davis & Elkins College but the Senators would rally to plate the final seven runs of the contest en route to a 9-5 victory. The Senators swept the twin bill after winning the first game 6-3 against the Tigers on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 2).

Senior third baseman Donato Gallano finished the day with three hits and four runs batted in for the Tigers, while senior center fielder Matt Flores went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's in game two.

Davis & Elkins scored the first runs of the afternoon against the Tigers. A pair of bases-loaded walks allowed the Senators to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Albert Cartenuto worked his way out of trouble in the frame to avoid any further damage.

The Tigers had their chances early in game one to try and even the score but ran into some nice defensive plays from the Senators to thwart any rallies. D&E increased its lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning as another bases-loaded walk plated the run.

Sophomore Michael Rupp took-over on the mound for Cartenuto with two outs in the top of the sixth inning as the Senators added another run to make it 4-0. Rupp need just two pitches to end the frame and keep his team within four runs of D&E.

D&E kept its foot on the gas pedal, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning and stretching the lead to 6-0. The Tigers looked to pull-off a huge rally in the bottom of the frame and would get some momentum going quickly. Senior second baseman Trent Dalton got the Tigers onto the scoreboard with his run-scoring single to right field. Two batters later, Gallano laced a double down the right field line and allow a pair of runs to score and trim the deficit to 6-3.

The rally would end for the Tigers as Flores grounded out to second base to end the contest.

In game two, the Tigers started the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. SIU turned to small-ball against the Senators to score the first run of the game. Gallano layed down a perfectly placed bunt that eluded the pitcher and allowed freshman shortstop Tyler Ault to score from third base. It would then be the Tigers turn to have a run scored via walk as senior Sean Deviney saw all-four pitches to him miss the strike zone.

Leading 2-0, SIU doubled its lead in the bottom of the second inning. Gallano scored dalton with a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher and would be followed by an RBI single to right field from Flores.

D&E trimed the SIU lead to 4-2 in the top of the third inning against senior Josh VanMeter. Flores would get one of those runs back for the Tigers in the bottom of the fourth inning as he delivered an RBI double down the left field line to score Ault.

The Senators cut the deficit to 5-3 in the top of the fifth inning against VanMeter as an infield single allowed a runner to score from third base. D&E would then take the lead in the top of the sixth inning as it plated four runs against SIU. VanMeter started the frame but would be removed before recording an out. Sophomore reliever Josh Delaney took-over for VanMeter and would see two runners score before getting out of the inning.

Leading 7-5, the Senators tacked-on two more runs against Delaney in the top of the seventh inning. D&E scored its first run of the frame on a wild pitch and followed with an RBI single down the left field line.
