Annapolis, MD - The Men's Water Polo Team kicked off their season at the NAVY Open. They competed in 3 games and 1 exhibition.
Day 1:
Game 1: Salem 9 vs Princeton 21 Final
Princeton went out ahead early shutting out Salem in the first quarter but SIU battled back for the next 3 quarters to keep the game from getting out of hand. Goal scorers in the game included 2 goals from
Djordje Stavrevski and
Marton Dudok, while
Mike Roake,
Inigo Velasco,
Petar Leontijevic,
Marino Chorro and
Robert Juhas all scored 1 goal.

Day 2:
Game 3: Salem 10 vs Cal Lutheran 9 Final OT
Cal Lutheran look an early 4-2 lead in the 1st quarter but as the Tigers did all weekend, they battled back. The game went back and forth all game with multiple lead changes. With the game tied after the 3rd and the 4th, extra time was needed. In the second overtime, it was the help of two true freshman to seal the victory.
Marino Chorro found an opening in front of the net to send the team up by one and
David Romero put the exclamation point on the game which saw him make 11 saves on 20 shots in the game. The goal scorers included 3 goals from Chorro, 2 goals from Djordje Stavrevski and
Milos Popovic, while
Michael Rojas, Marton Dudok and Petar Leontijevic all tallied 1 goal.
Game 4: Salem 8 vs George Washington 21 Final
The Tigers battled the MAWPC Championship runner up for the 1st quarter, going goal for goal with the Colonials. GW proved to be too much at the end of a very long weekend for the Tigers. Goal scorers included 2 goals from
Mike Roake, along with 1 goal from
Milos Popovic,
Marino Chorro, Inigo Velasco, Marton Dudok, Steve de Neergaard, and Petar Leontijevic.
The Tigers travel to Erie, PA and the Mercyhurst Invite on September 9th and 10th.
