Box Score 2 FRANKFORT, Ky. (March 4, 2018) – The Salem University Tigers baseball team finished its series against the Kentucky State University Thorobreds on a down note, dropping the final two games of a four-game series.
With the losses, the Tigers drop to 6-5-1 on the season while the Thorobreds improve to 6-5.
Game 1
Kentucky State's Elijah Collins hit a two-out, three-RBI double in the fourth inning, scoring Russell Sims, Brandon Story, and Adren Thompson to score the Thorobred final runs to defeat Salem 5-3.
Starting on the mound for the Tigers,
Carson Ellis struggled with his control in the first inning, hitting one batter and walking another before giving up the game's first run on a passed ball before ending the inning.
Thirius Jones led Salem offensively, hitting 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as the Tigers managed just six hits and two walks. Four other Tigers had one hit each while Salem struck out seven times.
Ellis (2-2) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up four hits and five earned runs with five strikeouts.
Dom Lawson started for Kentucky State, going six innings and striking out seven while giving up six hits and four earned runs.
Game 2
The Tigers struggled to contain Kentucky State University's Cameron Starks, who batted 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the Thorobreds to a 10-6 win.
Dillon Champagne (1-1-1) started on the mound for the Tigers, going four innings while giving up seven hits and four earned runs with six strikeouts.
Both teams started off with a two-run first inning.
Najay King hit a two-RBI double to put Salem on the board while Starks had a two-RBI single.
After King hit a RBI sacrifice fly in the third inning to give Salem a brief 3-2 lead, Starks capped of a three-run third with a two-RBI home run. The Thorobreds added two runs in the fourth, taking advantage of two errors.
The Tigers hit two batters to start the fifth inning before giving up a two-RBI double, then gave up a solo shot from Thompson in the sixth.
Salem scored three runs on two hits and two errors in the seventh inning before three consecutive outs to end the game.
King had three RBIs for Salem while
Jimmy Cramer was 3-for-4 with a RBI and three runs scored.
The Tigers will return to action on March 10 for their home opener with a doubleheader against Central Pennsylvania College.
