Late Run Secures the Win Over Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. –Four Tigers notched double figures, as the Salem University women's basketball team picked up an impressive 89-82 win over West Virginia Wesleyan, Tuesday night. 
 
With the win, Salem jumps to 3-12, while Wesleyan drops to 3-8. 
 
Salem shot 34.9 percent (29-83) from the field, while WVWC shot 41.5 percent (27-65). 
 
Salem connected on seven threes in the first half as it shot 36.8 percent (7-19), while Wesleyan failed to connect with a three-pointer (0-6). 
 
The Tigers outrebounded Wesleyan 50-46, outrebounding the Bobcats 23-13 on the offensive glass. Salem was able to turnover Wesleyan 19 times, while the Bobcats only forced Salem to 12.
 
Junior Aaliyah Holmes led the way for Salem as she notched a team-high 19 points and grabbed two rebounds, while freshman Nia Bishop netted 16 points, dished out five assists and snagged three steals. 
 
Freshman Daniela Quesada-Villalobos scored 10 points, as classmate Kayla Hall notched 10 points and seven rebounds. 
 
In the first quarter, Quesada-Villalobos opened the scoring in the contest as she knocked down a two-pointer jumper for a 2-0 Tiger lead at 8:42. Salem and Wesleyan battled back and forth in the first quarter as the Tigers grabbed a 21-16 lead at the end of the quarter after Holmes drained a shot from behind the arc. 
 
The Tigers extended their lead to 11 as Bishop found freshman Aitana Nuevo Garcia, as Nuevo Garcia connected on a three-pointer for a 32-21 advantage with 4:12 remaining in the first half. 
 
The Tigers led the Bobcats 37-33 at the break.
 
In the third, the Tigers surrendered the lead to the Bobcats, as Wesleyan took a 47-44 lead at 5:46 after a pair of made free throws. With 1:12 left in the third quarter, Salem regained the lead as Bishop connected with a jumper.
 
In the final quarter, Salem maintained the lead throughout as freshman Makayla Pickens hit a jumper with 5:07 remaining in the game as Salem led 77-71. 
 
The Tigers ensued with a 12-1 run as they led Wesleyan 87-75 with just 2:03 remaining in the contest. 
 
Salem is back in action Saturday as it returns home with a matchup against Shippensburg at 2:00 p.m.
