Women’s Basketball Dominates Bluefield State

SALEM, W.Va. – Behind five players scoring double digits, the Salem University women's basketball team cruised to an 87-57 win at home over Bluefield State, Saturday afternoon.
 
The win improves the Tigers to 4-15, while Bluefield State drops to 6-14.
 
Salem outrebounded Bluefield by 20, 49-29, while the Tigers' bench outscored Bluefield's bench 30-18.
 
The Tigers were 16-24 from the charity stripe, while Bluefield shot a mere 5-15 from the free throw line. Salem forced Bluefield to 19 turnovers, while the Tigers posted just 12.
 
Freshman Nia Bishop led the offensive attack as she netted a game-high 17 points, with three rebounds and two assists, while junior Precious Price notched 12 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out seven assists.
 
Freshman Makayla Pickens scored 12 points, while classmate Daniela Quesada-Villalobos garnered 11 points and pulled down five rebounds. Junior Endia Jones produced 10 points and grabbed four rebounds.
 
The Tigers found the lead quickly in the game off back-to-back threes from Price and junior Imari Bowers to give the Tigers a 6-2 lead at 7:41 in the first quarter. Bluefield took the lead at 4:42 in the first quarter as it led 9-8. However, this was the last time that Bluefield led for the rest of the game.
 
At 5:46 in the second quarter, Quesada-Villalobos drained a shot from behind the arc to give the Tigers a 16-point advantage, leading 30-14. At the break, Salem led Bluefield 43-24.
 
In the third quarter, Salem extended its lead to 26, as it led Bluefield 66-44 at the end of the third quarter.
 
Salem held its largest lead of the game in the fourth quarter after Pickens knocked down a three-pointer to give the Tigers an 85-32 advantage.
 
The Tigers outscored Bluefield in every quarter with a very impressive all-around performance.
 
Bluefield was led by Kara Sandy and Alexus Tucker who scored 16 and 12, respectively.
 
The Tigers are back in action Wednesday as they host Davis and Elkins at 5:00 p.m.
