ATHENS, W.Va. – In its first contest of 2019, the Salem University women's basketball team fell to Concord, who is receiving votes in the Atlantic Region, 90-73 on the road, Thursday afternoon.
Following the loss, the Tigers drop to 2-11, while Concord improves to 8-3.
The Tigers struggled from behind the arc as they shot just 19.5 percent (8-41), while Concord shot 33.3 percent (6-18). From the field, Salem shot 31.1 percent (28-90), while Concord connected on 57.1 percent of its shots (36-63).
The Tigers outrebounded the Mountain Lions 48-45, while the Tigers grabbed 22 offensive rebounds to Concord's four. Of the 22 rebounds, Salem netted 20 second-chance points.
Offensively, the Tigers were led by freshman
Nia Bishop who netted 14 points as she snagged four rebounds, while sophomore
Taelor Carter was the only other Tiger to net double-digit points with 11 and also grabbing four boards.
Junior
Endia Jones finished the game with eight points and seven rebounds.
To start the game, Salem notched the first basket as it led 2-0 with 9:44 left in the quarter as freshman
Daniela Quesada-Villalobos knocked down a jumper.
Unfortunately, this was the only lead for the Tigers for the remainder of the game.
Concord went on a 21-7 run after the Mountain Lions Riley Fitzwater made a layup at 2:59 in the first quarter as Concord led 21-9.
Salem trailed 46-37 at the intermission.
For most of the third quarter, Salem kept the lead between seven and 11, but could not get any closer. Concord held its largest lead at 3:19 in the fourth quarter at 83-63.
The Mountain Lions were led by Madison May as she notched a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds.
The Tigers stay on the road as they travel to Fayetteville State on Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
