URBANA, Ohio- The Salem University men's basketball team fell short to Urbana 88-83, Saturday afternoon.
The loss moves the Tigers to 10-6 on the season while pushing Urbana to 3-7.
The Blue Knights led the Tigers in field goals, shooting 48.4 percent (31-64) and from behind the arc shooting 57.1 percent (16-28), to Salem's 45.6 percent (31-68) and 36.7 percent (11-30), respectively. The Tigers had a higher free-throw percentage at 83.3 percent (10-12) to Urbana's 66.7 percent (10-15).
The Tigers also led the Blue Knights in fast break points (30-18), while Urbana's bench was key to the game scoring 32 points.
The Tigers were led by senior
Malik Toppin who netted a game-high of 27 points and grabbed 15 rebounds marking his ninth double-double on the year.
Freshman
Fonz Hale scored 22 points with 12 of them coming from beyond the arc, while senior
Christopher Shields finished with 15 points while also grabbing 7 rebounds.
The only other Tiger finishing in double digits was junior
Malique Ross who ended the game with 12 points and ten assists notching his first double-double of the season.
After a fastbreak three from Ross to cut the lead to seven points (36-43) in the first half, the Tigers came back in the second half outscoring the Blue Knights (47-45). However Urbana's seven point lead at the half allowed the Blue Knights to take the win.
Urbana was led by Datrey Long who had 26 points, 18 of them from three, while Ethan Snapp contributed to the Blue Knights with 16 points.
The Tigers head to Elkins, W.Va. to take on Davis & Elkins Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
