Salem University came within three points of taking the second set before falling to Alderson Broaddus 25-8, 25-22, 25-10 in NCAA Division II volleyball Tuesday at Philippi, W.Va.
Liane Moser and
Yesenia Munoz led the Tigers with five kills apiece. Munoz had no errors in 11 attempts for a .455 hitting percentage.

Salem jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set as the Tigers scored their first two points on kills by Munoz and
Alaina Weltz, and
Jalavia Johnson combined with Weltz and
Makhia Hinton on a pair of blocks. Alderson Broaddus rallied to tie the set 8-8 before another Munoz kill put Salem back on top.

The set saw five more ties and five lead changes before Alderson Broaddus took a two-point advantage. Salem answered with a 5-1 run on kills by Johnson, Hinton, Moser and Munoz to put the Tigers back on top 20-18.

After the Battlers came back to even the set, Moser and Munoz sandwiched kills around a side out to give the Tigers a 22-21 lead. But Alderson Broaddus won the final four points of the set to take a two-set advantage.

A kill and an ace by Moser helped Salem pull within two points after falling behind 6-1. But the Battlers answered with a 5-0 run to break the set open and seal the match.

Salem is off until next Tuesday when the Tigers play host to West Virginia Wesleyan College. Match time is 7 p.m. at T. Edwards Gymnasium.
